A new fully equipped gymnastic hall with changing facilities, spectator seating, multipurpose hall, offices, staff rooms and café is proposed on the former travellers site that will enable Woking Gymnastics Club to relocate from their current premises in Kingfield.

The building is a steel frame structure with trapezoidal concrete metal deck floor construction to the two storey area and structural decking to the roof of the gym. Due to a large amount of fill material in the ground, piling and concrete beams provide support for the superstructure and ground floor slab. Cold formed metal studwork spanning between the steel framework will support the external cladding.

vkhp have also been involved in the civil engineering aspect of the project in addition to designing the gymnasium. This has included design of the roads, footpaths, car parking to provide access to visitors to Smarts Heath Common and Woking Gymnastics Club. Sympathetic landscaping has led to designing feature ponds, swales and reed beds that will provide flood resilience and biodiversity. The civil engineering scheme will reduce the risk of flooding of the nearby Hoe Stream by incorporating wetlands, bypass channels and flood bunds. vkhp have coordinated with the Landscape Architect the profiles of the ditches and rainwater gardens, so that surface water generated by impermeable access roads could be collected and conveyed into the attenuation ponds without the need for a formalised “active” drainage system. Thanks to our innovative approach to the interception of hydrocarbons, vkhp was able to design out the need for an oil interceptor and still provide the natural receptor with adequate protection.
